Auto sales on road to record highs in Canada: report

OTTAWA ? Canadian and North American car sales will hit new post-recession peaks this year, predicts a new Scotiabank report, in another indication the hard-hit auto industry is recovering after being on the verge of collapse four years ago.

Scotiabank?s latest global auto report predicts vehicle sales in Canada will increase to 1.69 million units in 2013 ? just shy of the 1.7 million record set in 2002 ? following a strong six per cent pick up in 2012.

Meanwhile, U.S. sales are starting to rebound strongly from the slump of 2009, and will hit 15 million this year. That is still below the pre-recession highs of about 17 million, but the best since the slump.

The outlook is especially rosy for Ontario?s automotive industry, which is home to American and Japanese-owned auto assembly plants and their suppliers. Together, they build cars, minivans and other vehicles for the Canadian and U.S. markets.

?This is a good story for car dealers and it?s a good story for the producers, and all the parts companies in Ontario,? said economist Carlos Gomes, author of the report.

?The key driver for the auto market is what?s happening in the labour market and if you have employment gains of one-to-1.5 per cent, it is associated with a strengthening auto market,? Gomes said.

?And in the United States, they (also) have significantly more replacement demand because the average age of the fleet is now at 11 years and it used to be well below nine.?

Despite generally slow growth last year, Canada?s economy pumped out an above-consensus expectation of 312,000 jobs, all full-time, in the 12 months to December 2012, or a 1.8 per cent gain.

In the House, junior finance minister Ted Menzies welcomed the report, saying ?more auto sales means more jobs for Canadians all across this country,? as well as Ontario, where the auto sector is concentrated.

This year, Canadian vehicle sales are expected to be strongest in the resource-extracting provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador ? based on prospects that commodity prices and demand will improve with stronger economic fundamentals in the United States and China.

Gomes said Saskatchewan and Newfoundland are believed to have set new records for car sales in 2012, and will break those highs in 2013. Alberta?s sales volume is expected to fall just shy of the 249,000 record in 2007.

The rest of the country will see a modest increase, the auto report predicts, but will still fall about six per cent below peak levels.

For North America including Mexico, sales are expected to hit 17.72 million this year, 2.5 million less than in 2011 ? the last year for which there is recorded data ? but also more than two million from the 2005 peak of 19.7 million.

For the world as a whole, Gomes says sales will grow in all regions this year compared with 2012.

One Direction 2013: Zayn Malik?s ?brother? Leon Anderson shared Courtney ?CJ? Webb?s phone number on Twitter prompting hundreds of abusive calls!

January 30th, 2013 by Lisa McGarry.

zayn malik

While the case looks pretty sewn up against Zayn Malik and his recent love rat behaviour, it seems that some people are pretty convinced that the One Direction star is totally innocent.

Australian waitress Courtney ?CJ? Webb sold her story to The Sun at the weekend and claimed to have slept with the hunk last week. She said she didn?t realise he had a girlfriend, and told the newspaper that not only dud he try to film her during sex, but also tried to throw her out of his home as soon as the dirty deed was done.

However, pals of the singer are insistent that he?s done nothing wrong and one reportedly even went as far as to post Webb?s personal contact details online.

Leon Anderson ? who Zayn called his ?big brother? just last week ? apparently tweeted his thousands of followers and gave them Webb?s phone number, saying:

leon star

?Ppl shouldn?t tell lies ??.

CJ told The Sun that as a result, she has received hundreds of abusive calls from angry One Direction fans, with many threatening ti kill her. As if she hadn?t had enough death threats already!

She commented:

?I was expecting some abuse but it has got out of control. I?ve had hundreds of calls from all over the world.?

Detailing one of the calls she continued:

?One American girl left me six voicemails in an hour saying she was going to kill me. It?s really scary.?

Zayn-Malik-lstarino

Leon, who certainly mixes in some famous circles and is pals with Will.i.am, Justin Bieber and Nicole Scherzinger among others, deleted the tweet a few hours later, but the information had already been reshared many times.

CJ blasted him saying:

?Leon?s a nasty piece of work. It was Zayn who cheated, not me, and Leon let it happen.?

Malik?s last tweet was a plea to his fans to follow Leon and apparently he was there the night that Courtney and Zayn hooked up. On the evening that the reported sex session took place, the 1D hunk tweeted his millions of followers saying:

?Follow my big bro @LStarino ! !?

In a statement to The Sun Leon said:

?Courtney was a friend who tried to cause an issue with another friend.?

It sounds like this Leon is a bit of a bad influence on Zayn. If we were Perrie we?d be trying to nip that friendship in the bud asap.

What do you think Directioners? Leave your comments below?.

Rome's Trevi Fountain gets $2.9 million facelift

ROME (AP) ? Rome's 18th-century Trevi Fountain, famed as a setting for the film "La Dolce Vita," is getting a ?2.18 million ($2.9 million) restoration courtesy of the Fendi fashion house.

The 20-month project on one of the city's most iconic fountains was unveiled at a city hall press conference Monday featuring Fendi designers Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi, who said the project combined a love of Rome's past with a need to preserve its future.

Rome's fountains, Lagerfeld said, "are there to glorify water, which is the most important thing in life."

It's the latest example of Italian fashion companies coming to the aid of Italy's chronically underfunded cultural heritage. The founder of the Tod's footwear company is footing the bill for the ?25 million (nearly $34 million) restoration of Rome's ancient Colosseum, and Mayor Gianni Alemanno said he hoped these two donations were just the start.

"Without similar initiatives, we won't be able to save the cultural memory of our country," Alemanno said.

Fendi is also donating ?320,000 ($430,000) to restore another fountain complex in Rome, the Quattro Fontane.

The landmark Trevi Fountain is a must-see on any tourist itinerary. It was famously featured in Federico Fellini's 1960 movie "La Dolce Vita," with Anita Ekberg seductively splashing in the fountain's waters and calling out to leading man Marcello Mastroianni.

Many visitors flip a coin into the fountain: Tradition says that doing so ensures a prompt return to the Eternal City.

The Trevi restoration involves a complete overhaul of the fountain, including cleaning the travertine fa?ade and marble statues, replacing the gilded Latin inscriptions and re-waterproofing the main basin. The project will be carried out in phases, with the central section restored first, then the sides, then the top. At no time will it be closed to visitors, and officials said a screen bearing the image of the fountain will cover the scaffolding in a bid to minimize the eyesore for camera-toting tourists.

The restoration is expected to completed by 2015.

The fountain, which was built between 1732 and 1762, features Oceanus being carried on his chariots and contains many other allegorical references to water. The location of the fountain itself ? on a side street off central Rome's main thoroughfare ? is the termination of one of ancient Rome's aqueducts, the Aqua Virgo Aqueduct.

Alemanno stressed that the only reference to Fendi's sponsorship will be a small plaque near the fountain identifying Fendi as responsible.

Silvia Venturini Fendi said the firm, which her family founded in 1925 in Rome, wanted to give something back to the city and noted that she and her sisters had previously published a book on Roman fountains.

"For Romans, water is inspiration," she said.

US fighter jet missing on training mission

(AP) ? U.S. and Italian aircraft on Monday searched the Adriatic Sea after losing contact with a U.S. fighter jet believed to have crashed during a training mission off the coast of Italy.

The headquarters of the 31st Fighter Wing, at Aviano Air Base in Italy, said in a statement that the F-16 fighter had one pilot aboard when contact was lost Monday evening.

There was no early word on the fate of the plane or the pilot.

"The search for and rescue of our pilot is our top priority," said Col. David W. Walker, 31st operations group commander at Aviano. "We want to assure the family and friends of the lost airman that we are doing everything we can for this effort."

Initial word was that the F-16, which had taken off from Aviano, was not carrying weapons.

Italian aircraft and boats were helping in the search. The paramilitary Carabinieri force deployed helicopters, the Italian coast guard had motorboats in the area and Italian air force helicopters were also involved.

The search was focused on waters off a roughly a 9.5-mile stretch of coast between Cervia and Cesenatico in the northwestern end of the Adriatic.

Italian news agency LaPresse said the F-16 had sent an alarm signal to Aviano before it disappeared, and that three other F-16s that were flying in the same training mission made it safely back to Aviano base.

Weather conditions were difficult.

"The visibility is already poor because it is night, but there is also sleet" in the area hampering visibility, said Italian Coast Guard Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro. The coast guard asked three commercial cargo ships in the area to help out. The area of sea where the search was being concentrated was approximately 10 miles off the coast, Nicastro said.

An Italian coast guard plane was also involved in the search mission, along with its rescue boats.

PFT: Lovie Smith plans to sit out 2013 season

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vick throws a pass as he is rushed by New York Giants Umenyiora in the second quarter during their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

While it?s true that the Philadelphia Eagles won?t be dumping quarterback Mike Vick before $3 million of his $15.5 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed on February 6, the Eagles won?t be taking their time in deciding whether Vick will be moving along.

The plan, as we understand it, will unfold like a flow chart.

Step one, new Eagles coach Chip Kelly will study film in an effort to decide whether he wants Vick or Nick Foles or someone else to be the team?s quarterback.

Step two, if Kelly decides that he definitely wants Vick, will be to try to work out an alternative arrangement that entails Vick making less than $15.5 million.? The amount the Eagles are willing to pay will be determined in large part by how badly Kelly wants Vick.? There?s a chance, in theory, that Kelly will want Vick badly enough to bite the bullet and pay the full amount.

There?s also a chance Vick will want to play for Kelly badly enough to take a proverbial haircut on his promised pay.

Step three, if it?s determined that Kelly doesn?t want Vick or that Vick won?t accept whatever reduced contract the team is offering, will be to try to trade Vick to another team that would pay him more than the Eagles are willing to pay ? and that would also give the Eagles value in return for the 2010 comeback player of the year.

Time is of the essence on all steps, because if the Eagles are going to maximize trade interest and trade value, they need to do it before teams make other plans at quarterback, by signing for example a free agent.? It?s expected that the Eagles will head to the Scouting Combine with an action plan, with the hopes of getting an agreement in principle with a new team well before March 13, when trades will become finalized.

Complicating a potential trade is that a new team would have to pay Vick $15.5 million this year or persuade him to take less.

If the Eagles can?t trade Vick and if they can?t work out a new deal with him, that?s when things will get interesting.? If Vick shows up for the start of the offseason workout program in April and drops a dumbbell on his foot or pops an Achilles while running at the practice facility, the Eagles will owe him the full amount of his salary if/when he lands on injured reserve.

The Eagles could be tempted to try to block Vick from the facility, like the Titans did several years ago with the late Steve McNair.? But McNair ultimately won his grievance on that issue, and the Eagles would be tiptoeing into dangerous territory if they try to freeze Vick out.

That approach also would counter the team?s new effort to treat its players with a higher level of respect and dignity, an approach that G.M. Howie Roseman seems to be adopting in the wake of the departure of former team president Joe Banner.? (This presumes that there was a problem under Banner; some with the Eagles may be trying to sell the idea that there was.? The Mike Patterson debacle would tend to counter the idea that everything is fine and dandy now.)

Regardless, while the Eagles aren?t worried about next week?s deadline, they?ll be operating on internal deadlines that will prevent this from lingering deep into the offseason.

(AP) ? A handful of shenanigans and plenty of points ? yet still another ho-hum Pro Bowl.

Whether the NFL's all-star game will return next season is a something the league will ponder the next few months after the NFC's 62-35 blowout of the AFC on Sunday.

"It's been an unbelievable week," Seattle rookie quarterback Russell Wilson said, "And the thing was, if you watched us, everybody was competing today and it was really awesome."

Wilson at least got the crowd pumped up in the second half with some nifty scrambles and three passing touchdowns. There was also Houston's sack-happy defensive end J.J. Watt going out for a couple of passes as a wide receiver, and retiring Green Bay center Jeff Saturday snapping to two Mannings on opposite teams.

But while the NFC appeared unstoppable on offense, with nearly each player putting up fantasy-worthy lines in limited play, the AFC had five turnovers and scored most of its points well after the game was no longer competitive.

Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph was voted the game's MVP with five catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.

"Guys were competing, guys wanted to win and guys want to keep the game here," Rudolph insisted. "That was the point before the game. We want to keep this game rolling for future Pro Bowlers."

Watt, who had 20 1/2 sacks for Houston, lined up as a wide receiver on the AFC's third play from scrimmage, but missed a pass from Denver quarterback Peyton Manning. He was targeted one more time, but didn't make a catch.

He later showed a television camera a bloody left pinkie, joking with NBC broadcasters that it was proof that the players were trying.

"Hey, Commish, we're playing hard," Watt said as he showed his finger.

Roger Goodell has said the Pro Bowl won't be played again if play didn't improve this year. Last year, fans in Hawaii booed as lineman were clearly not trying. On one play in that game, Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen did a barrel roll to switch positions with a teammate.

If players were coasting this time around, it was less obvious. The AFC just played poorly. And fans didn't boo much ? the stands were relatively empty even though the game sold enough tickets to lift a local television blackout.

The game was trending on Twitter in the United States early on, but quickly gave way to the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the WWE Royal Rumble.

Saturday, retiring at the end of this season, played for both teams, though he came representing the NFC. He lined up on one play for the AFC to snap the ball one last time to Manning, his longtime former Colts teammate.

Saturday said it meant a lot to him that the Broncos quarterback, whom Saturday called a true friend, orchestrated the stunt.

"He's got a little more pull than I got," Saturday said. "He got it all set up and timed up for me, so it was really nice of him to do that."

Saturday played 13 seasons in Indianapolis, all with Manning ? except 2011, when Manning was out with a neck injury. Saturday then played later in the game for the NFC, snapping to Peyton's brother, Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Saturday's last play on the field was a passing touchdown by Eli Manning.

Peyton Manning said it was nice for the NFL to allow the play to happen.

"It's something that I'll always remember," he said, "that he'll always remember to kind of get that one, final snap together after the thousands that we've taken together."

Even as the NFC piled up touchdowns, the game struggled for memorable moments after Saturday's momentary switch.

In the second quarter, referee Ed Hochuli drew cheers when announcing a pass interference penalty on Denver cornerback Champ Bailey in the second quarter ? the first flag of the game.

"Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl," Hochuli said, drawing laughs and loud cheers.

Giants wideout Victor Cruz broke a Pro Bowl record with 10 catches. Tampa Bay receiver Vincent Jackson had 91 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Manning threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Cincinnati's A.J. Green had three TD catches for the AFC.

NFL officials said earlier in the week that the league wants to decide the future of the Pro Bowl by the time next season's schedule is released in April.

"We understood exactly what (Goodell) wanted, guys were making plays all over the field," Cruz said. "There was a little bit more high intensity than in years past and we were excited to play."

9-year-old stops speeding car, saves mom

By Sharon Wright, NBCChicago.com

A 9-year-old girl in New Lenox, Ill., is being called a hero for saving her mother's life by stopping their speeding car from crashing.

"At one point she went through a stop light and then at another point she was going over 70 miles per hour, and on the secondary road," said Alex Sheridan about the incident that happened a week earlier.

Sheridan's mother, Jennifer, went into diabetic shock while driving them home from a cousin's basketball game and lost control of their vehicle.

"I guess I went off the road and down through a little ditch and we were kind of heading towards trees and a sign and a utility pole," said Jennifer, who was phasing in and out of consciousness during the shock.

The vehicle was about to hit a tree when Sheridan reached over and turned off the key to stop the car. Then she continued to hold the key to prevent her mother from starting the car before help arrived.

When her father called to check on their delay, Sheridan told him what had happened and that they were lost. She then quickly snapped a picture of "Wood's Auto Body" and sent it to her dad, who was able to determine they were on Laraway Road in Frankfort.

Fortunately, both mom and daughter were OK. Jennifer is now wearing a special insulin pump to help prevent her going back into shock. She is grateful for her daughter's quick thinking.

"She saved her mom, she saved herself, she's an amazing kid," Jennifer said.

Holocaust archive reunites long lost families

Nearly 70 years after the end of the Second World War, a Holocaust archive in Germany is helping victims and survivors of Nazi atrocities to find clues about the past -- and is still reuniting families. NBC News' Andy Eckardt reports from Bad Arolsen, Germany.

By Andy Eckardt, Producer, NBC News

BAD AROLSEN, Germany -- Wilhelm Thiem may be 72 but he celebrated his first real birthday in November.

Abducted in Poland by Nazi troops at age two, Thiem has spent most of his life on a painful journey, seeking to discover his true name and identity.?

Until just a few months ago, the retired entrepreneur had not known his birth date, where he was born, what had happened to his mother or whether he had any other family members.

"I hardly knew anything about my personal history," Thiem said.?"I always felt like an outsider, it was a feeling of not belonging in this world."

Thiem was raised by a foster parent in northern Germany who was appointed by the Nazis to take care of the young child. Thiem called her "Mrs. Huebner" but was later officially adopted and given her maiden name.

At age 12, Thiem learned that Mrs. Huebner was not his real mother. He started asking her about his past, wanting to learn more about his family, but his questions remained unanswered. For decades, his personal history remained a mystery.

Early last year, Thiem came across a newspaper article about the International Tracing Service?(ITS), an organization that maintains a vast archive of files related to more than 17.5 million victims of the Holocaust and Nazi oppression.

"At first the ITS researchers told me that they could not find any documents with my name on them," Thiem recalled. "But then they contacted the Red Cross in Poland and in the end, there were some leads."

'Very emotional moment'
After several months of research, Thiem was informed that he had been born in Lodz, Poland, and that his birth name was Zbigniew Wilhelm Katmierczak.

For the first time in his life, Thiem held a birth certificate in his hands that gave him an identity.

"It was a very emotional moment," Thiem recalled. "Both my wife and I could not hold back tears."

Researchers revealed that his mother was also sent to Germany as a forced laborer but later returned to Poland. She eventually married a Frenchman and relocated to France.

Thiem was also told of a surviving aunt, who still lives in his Polish hometown.

He is now anxiously making plans for a trip to Lodz with his wife for a very special family reunion.

"I am hoping to learn more facts, maybe find other family members," Thiem said. "Maybe I can find traces of my mother and father.?All of this is of huge interest to me, it means so much."

Established by Allies in the final days of the Second World War and originally run by the Red Cross, the ITS helps to uncover the fates of Holocaust victims and others who suffered under the Nazi regime.

The archive in Bad Arolsen is said to be the largest storage facility of documents related to the Holocaust. It includes 30 million documents in 16 miles of shelves housing information about Holocaust survivors, displaced persons, slave laborers and political refugees from former Eastern Bloc countries.

Over the past 50 years, the ITS has answered more than 10 million requests. About 1,000 search requests continue to trickle in to the archive monthly.

"Many people still do not know what has become of their loved ones,"?said Dr. Ingeborg Berggreen-Merkel from Germany's federal commission of culture. "Even decades after the end of the Holocaust and the war, there is this persisting uncertainty, which results from the fact that part of one's own history remains untold."?

Visitors to the archive come into direct contact with the bureaucracy of mass murder.

Its meticulous records include concentration camp files, "deportation cards," patient records and a post-war index of non-German citizens. Its researchers plow through the stacks of yellowing paper, registering and scanning as many of the historic documents as possible. More than 95 percent have now been digitized.

But due to concerns about the victims' privacy, the ITS and the German government kept the files closed to the public for half a century. While search requests have been accepted since the end of the war, the archive was initially not "open source."

Following public pressure from survivor groups, historians and researchers, who called for public access to the archives, the ITS Commission -- consisting of 11 member states -- declared itself in favor of opening up Bad Arolsen in 1998.

Yet, scholars and researchers were only given access to the documents beginning in 2007.

"I think it was criminal that the documents were not opened up earlier," said Holocaust survivor and U.S. judge Thomas Buergenthal. He was able to find?records of his father's ordeal in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald at Bad Arolsen.

"This archive is my father's only memorial, we have no other," Buergenthal added.

But although time has claimed many eyewitnesses, the archive is still helping to reunite survivors of Nazi terror -- such as Thiem and his long lost aunt. She remembers her nephew -- who is now an elderly man -- as a "little child."

"I spent a lifetime wondering who I really am, now I know," Thiem said.

Mass funeral held in Egypt after riots kill 37

PORT SAID, Egypt (AP) ? Tens of thousands of mourners poured into the streets of the restive Egyptian city of Port Said on Sunday for a mass funeral for most of the 37 people killed in rioting a day earlier, chanting slogans against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Violence erupted briefly when some in the crowd fired guns and police responded with volleys of tear gas, witnesses said. State television reported 110 were injured.

"We are very worried about what may happen after the burial," said local youth activist Rasha Hamouda, noting the city was fraught with tension.

There was also a funeral in Cairo for one of two policemen killed in the Port Said violence a day earlier. Several policemen grieving for two colleagues heckled Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the force, when he arrived for their funeral, according to witnesses. The angry officers screamed at the minister that he was only at the funeral for the TV cameras ? a highly unusual show of dissent in Egypt, where the police force maintains military-like discipline.

Ibrahim hurriedly left and the funeral proceeded without him.

The violence in the city, about 140 miles northeast of Cairo, broke out on Saturday after a court on Saturday convicted and sentenced 21 defendants to death for their roles in a mass soccer riot in a Port Said stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 people dead. Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said. The 21 were convicted on murder charges and the court is to rule on the remainder of the 73 defendants in March.

The riots stemmed mostly from animosity between police and die-hard Egyptian soccer fans, known as Ultras, who have become highly politicized. The Ultras frequently confront police and were also part of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime two years ago.

They were also at the forefront of protests against the military rulers who took over from Mubarak and are now again on the front lines of protests against the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, the country's first freely elected leader.

Mourners chanted "There is no God but Allah," and "Morsi is God's enemy" as the funeral procession made its way through the city after prayers for the dead at the city's Mariam Mosque. Women clad in black led the chants, which were quickly picked up by the rest of the mourners.

There were no police or army troops in sight. But the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. Security officials said the gunfire came from several mourners who opened fire at the Police Club next to the cemetery.

A witness said the police responded to the gunfire with volleys of tear gas. The witness and the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation in the city on the Mediterranean at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

Survivors and witnesses of the Port Said soccer melee blame Mubarak loyalists for the violence, saying they had a hand in instigating the killings. The troubles erupted after Port Said's home team Al-Masry beat Cairo's Al-Ahly 3-1. Some witnesses said "hired thugs" wearing green T-shirts and posing as Al-Masry fans led the attacks.

Other witnesses said at the very least, police were responsible for gross negligence in the soccer violence, which killed 74 people, most of them Al-Ahly fans.

Anger at police was evident in Port Said, home to most of the 73 men accused of involvement in the bloodshed.

The trial was in Cairo and Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he handed down the guilty verdicts and sentences for 21 defendants. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

Verdicts for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, are to be delivered on March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers. All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

In Port Said on Sunday, army troops backed by armored vehicles staked out positions at key government facilities to protect state interests and try to restore order.

The military issued a statement urging Port Said residents to exercise restraint and protect public property, but also warning that troops would deal "firmly" with anyone who "terrorizes" citizens or infringes upon the nation's security and stability.

Rioters on Saturday attacked the prison where the defendants were being held and tried to storm police stations and government offices around the city. Health officials say at least 37 people were killed, including two policemen, in rioting on Saturday.

The clashes in Port Said were the latest in a bout of unrest across the country that has left a total of 48 people dead since Friday. That death toll includes 11 people killed in clashes between police and protesters marking the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew Mubarak after nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule.

Clashes broke out in Cairo for the fourth straight day on Sunday, with protesters and police near central Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising. Police fired tear gas while protesters pelted them with rocks.

The clashes show how turmoil was deepening in Egypt nearly seven months after Morsi took office. Critics say Morsi has failed to carry out promised reforms of the judiciary and police, and claim little has improved in the two years since the uprising.

At the heart of the rising opposition toward Morsi's government is a newly adopted constitution, which was ratified in a nationwide referendum.

Opponents claim the document has an Islamist slant. It was drafted hurriedly by the president's allies without the participation of representatives of liberals and minority Christians on the panel that wrote the charter.

Protesters on the streets this past week demanded the formation of a national unity government, early presidential elections and amendments to disputed clauses in the constitution.

Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which he hails, counter that the opposition was seeking to overturn the results of democratic and free elections. The Brotherhood, a well-organized and established political group in Egypt for decades, has emerged as by far the most powerful force in post-Mubarak Egypt.

As the situation in Port Said spiraled out of control Saturday, police disappeared from the city's streets, residents and security officials said, staying put in their camps, police stations and the city's security headquarters.

The military then dispatched troops to the city, taking up positions at vital state facilities, including the local power and water stations, the city's main courthouse, the local government building and the city prison. Navy sailors were guarding the local offices of the Suez Canal company.

Navy vessels were escorting merchant ships sailing through the international waterway, a vital income earner for Egypt's beleaguered economy. Military helicopters were flying over the canal to ensure the safety of shipping, according to Suez Canal spokesman Tareq Hassanein.

Residents said Port Said was quiet overnight except for intermittent bursts of gunfire. The city was still on edge early Sunday ? but streets were largely deserted, stores were closed for the second successive day, and some hotels asked guests to leave, fearing more violence.

Movie review: Movie 43 | canada.com

Movie 43

Rating: One star out of 5

Starring: Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Halle Berry, Leslie Bibb, Kate Bosworth, Gerard Butler and others

Directed by: Steven Brill, Peter Farrelly and others

Running time: 90 minutes

Parental guidance: Nudity, coarse language, violence, drug use

An attractive woman, played by Kate Winslet, gets ready for a blind date with a man who is rich, caring and handsome but has remained mysteriously single. He turns out to be a charming bon vivant, played by Hugh Jackman, whose sole flaw ? revealed when he removes his scarf ? is that he has a pair of testicles hanging from his neck.

No one else seems to notice this, despite Winslet?s frantic mugging. Jackman will drip soup onto the scrotum, and later accidentally dip it into a dish of melted butter that came with the lobster dinner. At one stage, a pubic hair falls into his food.

And (speaking of dickheads) so unfolds the first of 12 punishing short films ? short, but never short enough ? in the astonishing spectacle called Movie 43. Featuring many famous actors and directors, it?s an eye-opening example of what happens when a bad idea goes worse.

The concept, credited to producers Charles B. Wessler and Peter Farrelly, was apparently, ?Let?s be as crude and stupid as possible and see what happens.? The answer is that a pubic hair falls into your food.

There?s no point to the first short (which is directed by Farrelly), or indeed for any of them. The idea of a neck scrotum is its own comic reward, just as it must remain in subsequent episodes where, for example, Anna Faris plays a young woman who asks her devoted boyfriend, Chris Pratt, that age-old question, ?Will you poop on me?? The rest of the time is taken up with scenes of the Pratt character eating Mexican food and suffering from wall-shaking flatulence awaiting the big moment.

Movie 43 ? the unexplained title is the least of its enigmas ? was loosely motivated by an irreverent 1977 film called The Kentucky Fried Movie, but with more references to vaginas, one of the film?s chief obsessions. ?It?s obscene. It?s offensive,? says a movie executive (Greg Kinnear) in the framing story, in which desperate screenwriter Dennis Quaid is supposed to be pitching this very film, a conceit that is at once cheap, ridiculous, tiresome and, yes, obscene and offensive.

The worse crime, though, is that it?s not funny. I like to think I enjoy a good poop-on-me joke as much as the next man, but the creators have to do something with it. Not that one can expect such a premise to illuminate the human condition, but all Movie 43 does is cover it in feces and call it hilarity.

And so on it goes: Emma Stone and Kieran Culkin as ex-lovers screaming insults at one another (?Do you still like fingers in your butt-hole??); Halle Berry responding to a truth-or-dare challenge by stirring guacamole with her breast (relax: it?s a prosthetic); Richard Gere struggling to understand the problem with the ?iBabe,? an MP-3 player shaped like a naked woman, but with a dangerous fan spinning in its vagina.

There is one promising episode here, with Justin Long as Robin, the superhero sidekick, at a speed dating club and Jason Sudeikis as an interfering Batman. But it?s too little, too lame. Movie 43 is the year?s first utter disaster.

UK study shows abuse may affect cancer-related well-being in female patients

UK study shows abuse may affect cancer-related well-being in female patients [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 25-Jan-2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 25 2013) A new study by University of Kentucky researchers shows evidence that certain forms of abuse negatively influence women cancer patients' quality of life.

Published in the Journal of Women's Health, the research focuses on the effects of intimate partner violence (including physical, sexual, and psychological violence) and childhood sexual abuse and how these forms of abuse affected a woman's levels of depression, perceived stress, and cancer-related wellbeing.

The cross-sectional study included women newly diagnosed with either breast, cervical or colorectal cancer and included in the Kentucky Cancer Registry. Consenting women were interviewed by phone and 553 participated in the study.

Many cancer patients frequently experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, researchers observed that women who had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) were significantly more likely to report depressive symptoms at cancer diagnosis relative to cancer patients never experiencing IPV, suggesting that women's depressive symptoms surrounding a cancer diagnosis may be more directly associated with IPV than with the cancer treatment alone.

Those who had experienced childhood sexual abuse were more likely to report co-morbid conditions beyond the cancer diagnosis and higher current stress levels.

"These data suggest that identifying these forms of abuse in cancer patients may provide healthcare providers with helpful information to better support and improve the well-being of female cancer patients," said first author Ann L. Coker, associate dean for research, professor and Endowed Chair in the Center for Research on Violence Against Women at UK. "Clinicians could improve physical and psychological functioning of women with cancer by asking women about their current and lifetime experience with these forms of abuse and providing appropriate referrals and services depending on the individual woman's experiences."

Sensu Brush Portable Artist Brush and Stylus

  • Pros

    Elegant design. Responsive brush.

  • Cons Not as precise as a pressure-sensitive stylus.
  • Bottom Line

The Sensu Brush combines a very capable capacitive touch screen stylus with an intuitive paintbrush that works on the very same touch screen.

By Will Greenwald

The iPad and other tablets have plenty of art apps that let talented hands draw on their capacitive touch screens. Sure, you could use a finger, but a stylus is a much better choice. Better still is a capacitive-touch-screen-compatible brush like the Sensu Brush ($39.99 direct). It's similar in concept to the Nomad Compose, as a stylus with an actual brush that works on screens, but it offers a much more attractive design and a more comfortable way to draw on your tablet's display.

The Sensu is simple and elegant, with a 3.6-inch-long cap/handle that conceals whichever of the two included capacitive tips you're not using. Closed, it's a 4.5-inch touch screen stylus with the standard black, rubberized, slightly spongy tip we've seen in many styli before. It's solid and just long enough to use like a pen, and alone, it's a suitable, if slightly overpriced, as a capacitive touch-screen stylus. If you pull it out of the cap and flip it around, though, the stylus completely transforms.

With the stylus hidden securely in the long cap, the Sensu grows to 7.2 inches and gains a slender, rubberized grip and a bristle paintbrush that works on your tablet's touch screen. The grip and the long cap lets the Sensu rest comfortably in your hand like an actual paintbrush, and the tip itself feels perpetually flexible, like it was a real paintbrush freshly dipped in water.

Sensu Brush

The paintbrush tip felt soft and responsive when I tested it on an iPad. I did some doodling in ArtRage, and while there was some slight lag in the drawings as I performed fast brushstrokes, the app followed my motions perfectly. Since it's a capacitive touch screen, the iPad's display (and other mobile devices' touch screens, with which the Sensu can also work) can only detect inputs as points, not as entire areas. So I couldn't "paint" in the same way I could with an actual brush; the point the touch screen detected was consistently in the center of the brush regardless of whether I was tapping the screen or pressing down to fan out the bristles. This is a limitation of the screen technology, and not a problem specific to the Sensu.

If you want a capacitive touch screen stylus specifically for art and don't want to deal with the extra price and hassle of a pressure-sensitive stylus, the Sensu Brush is one of the best styli you can find. It feels good, looks good, and easily switches between standard stylus and paintbrush. If you just want to tap and sketch, the $25 Pogo Sketch Pro is our top choice for non-professional stylus, and if you want greater responsiveness, an electronic, pressure-sensitive stylus like the Adonit Jot Touch is a better choice (but it's twice as expensive).

Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart heading to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) ? Serious theater fans have a reason to suddenly freak out: Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart will team up on Broadway this fall in two of the most iconic plays of the 20th century.

Producers announced Thursday that Stewart and McKellen will star in Harold Pinter's "No Man's Land" and Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" which will play in repertoire under the direction of Sean Mathias.

The Broadway theater, performance dates, the two supporting actors and the schedule of performances will be announced later.

Stewart and McKellen starred in a production of "Waiting for Godot" in London's West End in 2009. Prior to Broadway, they'll tackle "No Man's Land" in an as-yet-unspecified out-of-town tryout this summer.

Mathias told The Associated Press all three men struggled to make "Waiting for Godot" as honest and realistic as possible ? an approach they'll likely replicate with Pinter's play.

"What we tried to do, with so much effort, was make it real. Make them human beings, compassionate, funny, flawed and vulnerable and cocky ? all the things human beings are," Mathias said. "We never wanted to make it esoteric. I'm sure this is how we will approach the Pinter as well."

Stewart, 72, and McKellen, 73, first worked together in 1977 in Tom Stoppard's "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour." They've also starred in the "X-Men" movie franchise as Professor Xavier and Magneto.

Stewart will play Vladimir in "Waiting for Godot" and Hirst in "No Man's Land;" McKellen will play Estragon in "Waiting for Godot" and Spooner in "No Man's Land."

"My main feeling is it's lovely to be back with friends and it will be lovely to be back in New York," said McKellen, who is doing a sit-com in England and next goes to Middle Earth to film scenes for "The Hobbit" franchise. "But I've got an awful lot to do in the meantime."

McKellen made his Broadway debut in Aleksei Arbuzov's "The Promise" in 1967 and won a Tony Award for his performance in "Amadeus" in 1981. His films include "Apt Pupil," ''Gods and Monsters" and "The Lord of the Rings."

Stewart, perhaps best known as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," first appeared on Broadway in Peter Brook's production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 1971 and has recently been in David Mamet's "A Life in the Theatre" and "Macbeth."

Putting the Beckett and Pinter plays together in repertoire makes theatrical sense since both require four male actors and they both mine a surreal, witty vein.

"Both plays play tricks with our memory, with time, with what time is," said Mathias. "Both plays are dealing with a landscape of poetry, a landscape of psychology, a landscape that is both real and isn't real. So there are incredible reverberations and resonances."

Stewart and McKellen will sink their teeth into Beckett and Pinter after spending the summer filming "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Mathias, a Tony nominee in 1995 for "Indiscretions," will be directing "Breakfast at Tiffany's" on Broadway this spring.

Now a thorny question: Who gets top billing on Broadway ? McKellen or Stewart? After all, both actors have gotten knighthoods for their services to drama and the performing arts.

"For me there's no question," Stewart said. "Ian was a star actor while I was still working in regional theater. To be absolutely frank, I was in awe of him and his work long before I knew him."
