Pitt, Carnegie Museum of Natural History kick off National Science Foundation project to educate Pittsburghers, New Yorkers, and other urbanites about how climate change will affect them

PITTSBURGH--Though climate change is often perceived as a phenomenon affecting remote polar territories, urban hot pockets such as Pittsburgh, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, are also experiencing environmental changes affecting energy, transportation, water, and public health systems. To raise awareness about climate change in cities, a network of educational organizations, including the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Museum of Natural History, has created the Climate and Urban Systems Partnership with the help of a $5 million National Science Foundation grant.

"Often in cities, people can feel immune to thinking about climate. They aren't thinking it happens in D.C., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, or New York. But these urban East Coast cities will have to deal with climate change in the next 50 years and adapt to how we live to be able to respond to that change," said grant co-principal investigator Kevin Crowley, an associate professor of learning sciences and policy in Pitt's School of Education and director of Pitt's Center for Learning in Out-of-School Environments.

Members of the Climate and Urban Systems Partnership are developing city-specific educational programs about climate change in urban environments. The members include the Columbia University Center for Climate Systems Research and the New York Hall of Science in New York City, The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, and the Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., in addition to Pitt's Center for Learning in Out-of-School Environments and Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

In Pittsburgh, Carnegie Museum of Natural History is leading the effort to connect local organizations interested in climate change and urban decision-making. This group will then offer climate change activities at city festivals and gatherings. Crowley and fellow faculty and students in the Center for Learning in Out-of-School Environments are advising the development of hands-on activities so that they are based on the latest findings in science education research and capitalize on the museum's scientific resources.

The Pitt and Carnegie Museum of Natural History experts have already tested one activity with the Pittsburgh public at an Earth Day event in Frick Park. The group crafted model cities on paint trays by gluing tiny Lego houses to the trays and painting "streets" between the toy houses. Earth Day participants then poured water over the tiny "cities" to simulate severe storm events that may increase with climate change. The water filled up the paint-tray basins, helping participants to visualize how water run-off can inundate cities. Participants could then "purchase" sponges of various colors representing rain gardens and rain barrels to help with run-off issues. The activity connected to the Nine Mile Run Watershed Association, an organization present at the Earth Day event that has been working to increase the number of rain barrels and rain gardens in Pittsburgh.

"Pittsburgh festival goers, including organizations, are the eyes, ears, and hearts of this city," said Mary Ann Steiner, director of the Center of Lifelong Science Learning at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. "They are the ones looking at this city every day and seeing the changes. We want to tap into the passions people have, exposing them to a wide range of climate change elements and addressing them in easy-to-understand ways that truly resonate."

Over the next year, the Pittsburgh partnership will develop its city-specific curriculum, paying particular attention to the learning sciences and basing all upcoming activities around leading-edge learning sciences principles. Crowley and his team at the Center for Learning in Out-of-School Environments will be looking at the impact of these citywide efforts across the four eastern cities to see which levels of engagement support changes in the public's perception of climate change--for example, the impact of decision-making among individuals versus larger municipal entities. "We'll be coming up with design principles that fit well with the public and considering what we can do to transfer our message from one situation to another, one city to the next," said Crowley. "We're trying to think about people's response to climate change as being connected to the city in which they live."

Once all climate change educational programs are set up throughout the cities, the Climate and Urban Systems Partnership will conduct longitudinal studies to see whether the activities are changing the public's perception of climate change. By 2016, the partnership hopes all programs will be operating in the cities involved.

The Pittsburgh partnership is currently reaching out to local educational organizations and nonprofit organizations that are interested in participating in the initiative. Those who wish to partner should contact Mary Ann Steiner at SteinerM@CarnegieMNH.org.

The Climate and Urban Systems Partnership is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation through its programs of Discovery Research K-12, Climate Change Education, and Support for Enhancing Diversity.

Work For Yourself With A Home Business - PDF

Work For Yourself With A Home Business

There are many ads out there promising instant success working from home. There are a lot
of work from home and get rich scams on the web. You can be successful, but you need to
understand that it takes hard work and dedication. This below article will provide you with
methods for beginning your online business. morseng

Business cards are a wise investment. You can find business card offers online for free or
very cheap. Your cards should include all relevant information including your name, your
business name and logo and your phone number. Be sure to list you website and email
address. This helps make it easy for customers and prospects to contact you.

Determine the prices of your products. Find out the cost of making your own products.
Generally speaking, the formula for the price is double how much it costs to make your
merchandise. This should give you the price you need to charge wholesale buyers. Get the
retail price by multiplying the cost three times.

A work schedule that is regular is helpful. It is necessary to have a time allocated to actually
sit down and work. Working lots of hours may be necessary sometimes, but be sure not to
overdo it. Spending quality time with loved ones is a great way to get rid of stress, so make
sure that your work does not cut into family time.

Is there a particular need that needs filling in your life? This could be the product you should
chose for selling or providing in your home business. People buy items that fulfill their
everyday needs. Come up with a product that solves a problem, and your business is likely to
succeed.

You need drive and initiative to succeed with a home business. If you have the land, consider
building an office space on your property. This is beneficial in the sense that you will not have
customers entering your personal space and the local government may have stipulations
requiring it. This is also an excellent way to maintain appropriate and clear boundaries
between work and home.

Create the opportunity for potential customers to buy from your website. Too many small
business owners limit their potential by having a website for display and contact purposes
only. Design your site to sell to anyone who looks at it and raise your bottom line! If you
register at different sites you can do so cheaply.

Be certain that your home-based enterprise is compatible with your family's lifestyle. If it
starts to be a problem for your family, you should think up a different type of business.

As spelled out earlier, starting a home business and being your own boss is a dream of many
people. However, starting your own home business can be difficult if you do not have the

right education or information to succeed.

A Third Day of Protests in China Against Refinery

Ng Han Guan/Associated Press

Protesters faced off against the riot police on Sunday in Ningbo, China. Many said they were wary of the government?s about-face.

BEIJING ? Officials in the coastal city of Ningbo, China, promised on Sunday night to halt the expansion of a petrochemical plant after thousands of demonstrators clashed with the police during three days of protests that spotlighted the public?s mounting discontent with industrial pollution.

The protests, which followed similar demonstrations in other cities in the past year, point to the increasing willingness of the Chinese to take to the streets despite the perils of openly challenging the country?s authoritarian government.

Although local officials were undoubtedly alarmed by the size and ferocity of the protests, their decision to bend so quickly was also probably influenced by the coming series of meetings that will determine China?s next generation of leaders. The ruling Communist Party, always eager to keep a lid on public discontent, is especially nervous about any disruptions that might mar the 18th Party Congress, which is set to begin on Nov. 8 in the capital and will serve to ratify the first change of leadership in a decade.

But Ningbo residents reached by phone said they were skeptical of the government?s sudden change of heart. ?The announcement is just a way to ease tensions,? said Yu Xiaoming, a critic of the plant who took part in negotiations with the authorities on Sunday.

The protests, which began last week when farmers blocked a road near the refinery, grew over the weekend as thousands of students and middle-class residents converged on a downtown square carrying handmade banners and wearing surgical masks painted with skull and bones.

On Saturday, the demonstrations turned violent when riot police fired tear gas and began to beat and drag away protesters. At one point, according to people who were there, marchers tossed bricks and bottles at the police. At least 100 people were detained, according to some estimates, although most were later released.

The project, an $8.8 billion expansion of a refinery owned by the state-run behemoth Sinopec, was eagerly backed by the local government, which has been promoting a vast industrial zone outside Ningbo, a city of 3.4 million people in Zhejiang Province. Residents were particularly unnerved by one major component of the project: the production of paraxylene, a toxic petrochemical known as PX that is a crucial ingredient in the manufacture of polyester, paints and plastic bottles. Many residents contend that the concentration of polluting factories in the Ningbo Chemical Industrial Zone has led to a surge in cancer and other illnesses.

While mass demonstrations against mining operations, copper smelters and trash incinerators have disrupted Chinese cities in recent years, the construction of paraxylene plants has been especially controversial. In 2007, protesters in the coastal city of Xiamen, in Fujian Province, successfully forced the relocation of a PX plant that had been planned just 10 miles from downtown. Last August, officials in Dalian, in northeast China, announced that they would shut down a PX plant there after thousands of residents angrily confronted the riot police. That factory is still operating.

Ma Jun, an environmental activist in Beijing, applauded the government?s sudden about-face but said he hoped the weekend of unrest would convince Chinese leaders that soliciting public opinion on industrial development is in their best interest, especially given how much money is wasted when such projects are canceled midway.

?We?ve seen the same pattern over and over again,? said Mr. Ma, the director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs. ?Ignoring public concerns leads to confrontation. We can?t resolve all our environmental issues through street action. The cost is just too high.?

Despite the best efforts of government censors, many of the protests have been fueled by social media. In Ningbo, residents held aloft smartphones and computer tablets and flooded microblog sites with images and vivid descriptions of the running battles with the police. The Chinese news media carried no reports of the protests.

In recent days, the district government of Zhenhai, which includes Ningbo, one of China?s most affluent cities, tried to reassure residents, saying the plant would include the latest pollution-control technologies. Officials also said they had spent nearly $1 billion to relocate 9,800 households away from the refinery site.

In a brief statement posted on the government?s Web site on Sunday, officials said they decided to cancel the PX plant after consulting with investors. They also pledged to conduct ?scientific verifications? on other elements of the project, although they provided no further detail.

The announcement appears to have done little to mollify popular anger. According to The Associated Press, an official who read the statement through a loudspeaker on Sunday evening was drowned out by the crowd, which then called on the mayor to resign and demanded the release of protesters who had been detained.

Later in the evening, several people posting on Sina Weibo, a popular microblog service, said the police were arresting students at Ningbo University and protesters on the street who had refused to disperse. The accounts could not be verified.

Patrick Zuo contributed research.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: October 29, 2012

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article misstated the timing of an announcement by officials in Dalian. They announced that they would shut down a PX plant there in August of last year, not this year.

Windows 8 demand higher than 7's, says CEO Ballmer

2 hrs.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has a rosy outlook for their new Windows 8 operating system, saying Monday that "we're seeing preliminary demand well above where we were with Windows 7." But other measures indicate that this statement may be somewhat misleading.

Ballmer was speaking at a San Francisco event where Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8?hardware were being showcased. Windows 8 itself officially launched last Friday, but has been available in preview form for more than a year.

Comparing the new OS to its predecessor is natural, but could Windows 8,?which has been intensely polarizing in the tech community, really be more in demand than the incredibly popular Windows 7, which famously fixed what Windows Vista had broken??

To find out, I spoke with?Jay Chou,?senior research analyst at IDC's Worldwide PC Tracker.

While he cautioned that Ballmer may be privy to some statistics not yet publicized, Chou suggested that Windows 8 probably isn't going to move PCs the way Windows 7 did ? but that this has as much to do with the broader PC market as it does with the desirability of the OS.

"Our outlook on Windows 8 is that it will bring somewhat of a boost on the consumer side, but really, its full impact won't be felt till much later. We don't see it as a significant factor that will help the hardware business to recover."

He compared the circumstances of the release to those in 2009, when Windows 7 launched. At the time, millions of consumers and businesses were waiting eagerly for a chance to upgrade, having skipped the poorly?received Windows Vista. Not only that, but netbooks were still selling at high rates, and Windows 7 was a great fit for that type of PC. Windows 7, in other words, arrived just when people wanted to buy into both new hardware and a new operating system.

Now, however, the economy has slowed PC shipments, tablets have replaced netbooks as the best?option for casual computing, and for many people, the upgrade to Windows 7 is still fresh in their minds. Furthermore, Windows 8 isn't a cheap upgrade:

"Cost is a factor," said Chou. "To really take advantage of Windows 8, you need the hardware, the touch capability. You might have to upgrade your mouse or get a multi-touch trackpad."

And while sales of the Surface RT device appear to be fairly brisk, the bulk of consumers running desktops and laptops do not appear to be convinced; Windows 8 likely won't be spiking hardware sales the way its predecessor did.

So how can Ballmer make the statement that demand is higher? The fact is, while sales might not pick up for a year or so, Windows 8 has driven a huge amount of curiosity: the consumer preview of the OS was downloaded more than a million times on the first day.

If Ballmer's statement is interpreted as meaning they've seen unprecedented interest in the OS, then it can be considered factual. But interest does not always translate to sales.?What people could test for free they may not want to pay to own, especially when reviews of the OS are mixed, and?the best experiences rely on new, often costly hardware.

No sales statistics have been released thus far, but it has only been a few days since the official release. Microsoft will be obligated to make some official sales statements soon in order to satisfy investors and build consumer confidence.?We will report any such news, which should appear over the next few weeks.

Search Engine Marketing Makes Your Small Business a Success ...

This is a guest post by Michelle from www.crazypayday.co.uk.

With the internet market increasing in size each day there are numerous new businesses appearing and posing potential threats to existing small firms. The Internet offers the largest platform for all business owners to promote their brands worldwide and search engine marketing (SEM) plays a significant role in it.? Therefore is very important for business owners to create an online presence by promoting their brand and attracting good traffic towards their website. Incorporating Search engine marketing in marketing strategies is the most efficient method to gain an online presence for your brand in the e-commerce world.

SEM is basically a marketing strategy that helps the online business owners to increase the usability and visibility of their website and attract a good amount of visitors towards their website. There are different techniques that are used in the search engine marketing process that include the following;-

keyword selection:

In this marketing strategy the business owners employ techniques to associate the website with relevant and specific keywords. This is considered the first step of the marketing strategy where different keywords that are used for the website are analysed and the one that is most relevant and unique is targeted to increase the traffic of the website.

Website saturation:

In this method the presence of the website on the search engine is determined. This is achieved by checking the

  • site saturation- the number of website pages that are indexed by the crawlers
  • site popularity- the number of backlinks associated to the website

key performance indicators (KPI):

Here you need to identify the most important KPIs for your site and frequently monitor them. These indicators usually include the number of site visits, number of visits made from organic keyword traffic, number of visits made from paid keyword traffic and many more.

PPC advertising:

Pay per click advertising has become one of the most important marketing strategies that help with improving the ranking of the site on the search engines. Successful and top companies provide advertising space on their website associated to relevant keywords. All the advertisers need to do is to pay them for the number of clicks that are made on the advertising. Through this method potential customers visit your site and most of them turn into return customers.

Paid inclusion in search engines:

Here a particular amount is paid to the search engine providers for the inclusion of your website advertising into their search results. This allows your advertisement to be displayed on the top of the search results which can help you in attracting good traffic for your site.

If you find any difficulty in the above mentioned process and need further guidance then you can contact the experts from digital media agency who can help you out.

The Weekend Update: Jet2, Sir Richard Branson, ski resorts & more ...

What the Saturday papers said

Shares in Dart Group, which runs the Jet2 budget airline and package holiday group, rose after miserable weather and tightened family finances resulted in a surprisingly strong summer holiday season. Passenger numbers at its Jet2holidays package division almost doubled year-on-year to 312,000 as families opted for all-inclusive deals when trying to escape the wet summer (FT).

European airlines have been accused of obstructing passengers who seek compensation for delays and cancelled flights. Flight-Delayed.com, a website which offers assistance to passengers with claims, has come up against airlines that refuse to share information and others that reject all complaints out of hand (Telegraph).

Expedia?s share price soared on Friday after it reported solid quarterly earnings and raised its full-year earnings outlook. Smaller rival Priceline also rose, and its stock has gained 2.7% over the past five days (FT).

Alitalia stands to lose tens of thousands of pounds as a result of a computer error that allowed internet users to buy flights for next to nothing. The airline ran a promotion on its Japanese website, offering ?195 off selected flights, but a technical oversight meant thousands of customers were able to use the discount on other routes (Telegraph).

Rezidor Hotel Group, the operator of Radisson, Missoni and Park Inn, reported a 4.6% increase in third quarter revenue per available room and announced a ?15m cost-cutting programme (Times).

The ?6m St John Hotel in Leicester Square has fallen into administration only 18 months after opening. Kier Group, the contractor on the conversion of the former Manzi?s restaurant, confirmed it was still owed money for its work (Times).

Valve opens Steam for Linux beta registration, wants pros only

Right on schedule (ahem), Valve has begun requesting applications for the first Steam for Linux beta test. There are only 1,000 spots available, but the company is looking for "experienced Linux users" only -- presumably, ones that will be better at debugging than spilling zombie brains. So, if you've got a rig running Ubuntu 12.04 or above and decent Linux knowledge, head to the source link to register your interest.

'Frankenstorm': Worse than sum of its parts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The storm that is threatening 60 million Americans in the eastern third of the nation in just a couple of days with high winds, drenching rains, extreme tides, flooding and probably snow is much more than just an ordinary weather system. It's a freakish and unprecedented monster.

How did it get that way?

Start with Sandy, an ordinary late summer hurricane from the tropics, moving north up the East Coast. Bring in a high pressure ridge of air centered around Greenland that blocks the hurricane's normal out-to-sea path and steers it west toward land.

Add a wintry cold front moving in from the west that helps pull Sandy inland and mix in a blast of Arctic air from the north for one big collision. Add a full moon and its usual effect, driving high tides. Factor in immense waves commonly thrashed up by a huge hurricane plus massive gale-force winds.

Do all that and you get a stitched-together weather monster expected to unleash its power over 800 miles, with predictions in some areas of 12 inches of rain, 2 feet of snow and sustained 40- to 50 mph winds.

"The total is greater than the sum of the individual parts" said Louis Uccellini, the environmental prediction chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologists. "That is exactly what's going on here."

This storm is so dangerous and so unusual because it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both ? part hurricane, part nor'easter, all trouble," Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground, said Saturday.

With Sandy expected to lose tropical characteristics, NOAA is putting up high wind watches and warnings that aren't hurricane or tropical for coastal areas north of North Carolina, causing some television meteorologists to complain that it is all too confusing. Nor is it merely a coastal issue anyway. Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told reporters Saturday: "This is not a coastal threat alone. This is a very large area. This is going to be well inland."

Uccellini, who estimated that 60 million people will feel the storm's wrath somehow, said: "This storm as it grows and moves back to the coast on Monday and Tuesday, the circulation of this storm will extend all the way from the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, toward the Carolinas up into New England and southern Canada. It's really going to be an expansive storm system."

It's a topsy-turvy storm, too. The far northern areas of the East, around Maine, should get much warmer weather as the storm hits, practically shirt-sleeve weather for early November, Masters and Uccellini said. Around the Mason-Dixon line, look for much cooler temperatures. West Virginia and even as far south as North Carolina could see snow. Lots of it.

It is what NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco meant Thursday when he called it "Frankenstorm" in a forecast, an allusion to Mary Shelley's gothic creature of synthesized elements.

Cisco and others have called this storm unprecedented. Uccellini, who has written histories about winter storms, said the closest analogs are the 1991 Perfect Storm that struck northern New England and a November 1950 storm. But this is likely to be stronger and bigger than the Perfect Storm; it will strike farther south, and affect far more people.

In fact, the location among those with the highest odds for gale-force winds in the country's most populous place: New York City. New York has nearly a 2-in-3 chance of gale force winds by Tuesday afternoon.

One of the major components in the ferocity of the storm is that it is swinging inland ? anywhere from Delaware to New York, but most likely southern New Jersey ? almost a due west turn, which is unusual, Uccellini said. So the worst of the storm surge could be north, not south, of landfall. And that gets right to New York City and its vulnerable subways, which are under increasing risk of flooding, he said.

"There is a potential for a huge mess in New York if this storm surge forecast is right," Masters said.

Add to that the hundreds of miles of waves and the overall intensity of this storm, Uccellini said in an interview, and "we are in the middle of a very serious situation."

Forecasters are far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they are about winds.

There are several measures for hurricanes. And one NOAA research tool that measures the intensity of hurricane overall kinetic energy forecasts a 5.2 for Sandy's waves and storm surge damage potential. That's on a scale of 0 to 6, putting it up with historic storms, such as Katrina. It rates a much smaller number for wind.

Because of the mix with the winter storm, the wind won't be as intense as it is near the center of a hurricane. But it will reach for hundreds of miles, spreading the energy further, albeit weaker, meteorologists said.

Uccellini and Masters said they expect the central pressure of the storm to drop to a near record low for the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast for any time of year. That is a big indication of energy and helps power the wind. This puts it on par with the 1938 storm that hit Long Island and New England, killing 800 people, or the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane.

Return of a Legend: Iconic 1940 Ford Coupe Body Shell Now Available for Hot Rodders and Classic Car Enthusiasts

-New reproduction 1940 Ford Coupe steel body shell complements Ford's existing stable of fully assembled classic Mustang car bodies

-The new 1940 body is officially licensed by Ford Restoration Parts and uses high-strength steel and modern welding techniques

-Hot rodders can order the 1940 Coupe with a modified firewall and install a larger, modern powertrain

-SEMA show cars featuring new body show high-quality construction

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 26, 2012 ? One of the most cherished and collected classic cars of the pre-World War II and hot rod era ? the iconic 1940 Ford Coupe ? is the latest addition to Ford Motor Company's growing stable of officially licensed all-steel reproduction car bodies.

Available now for ordering, and complementing the 1965-70 Mustang bodies, the 1940 Ford
Coupe body is also constructed of modern, high-strength steel and is assembled using modern
welding techniques. The new body comes rustproofed from the factory and is ready to be
assembled as a custom hot rod or as a faithful tribute to the original.

At the upcoming Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, Ford
will display a custom 1940 Ford hot rod built using a reproduction body and a new bare body
shell that demonstrates the high-quality construction. Prices start at $11,900 plus shipping. The
full body shell as well as individual steel panels are available through Dennis Carpenter Ford
Restoration Parts, http://www.dennis-carpenter.com.

The fully built, copper-colored SEMA show car sports a new 5.0-liter V8 engine, four-speed
automatic transmission and Mustang II front suspension. The roof has also been chopped or
lowered to give the car an even meaner look.

"Like its older 1932 Deuce Coupe and younger Mustang siblings, the 1940 Ford is a bodystyle
and design that represents Ford at its best," said Dennis Mondrach, Ford Restoration Parts
licensing manager. "The 1940 Ford Coupe has always been highly sought after and collectible.
Unfortunately, good, solid restorable examples have become hard to find and expensive, so this
faithful reproduction is bound to prove popular."

The '40 Ford: Part of American culture
The 1940 Ford has had a major influence on post-World War II America, said Detroit automotive
historian Joe Cabadas, author of "'40 Ford: Evolution * Design * Racing * Hot Rodding."

"Bootleggers down south always wanted to know who had the fastest car," said Cabadas. "Because of its lightweight V8 engine, they started racing them on Sundays, and that is the beginning of stock car racing."

After World War II, the 1940 Ford was at the forefront of another major cultural movement ? hot rodding. The '40 Ford got noticed by World War II veterans, who began buying up the cars and turning them into hot rods by adding performance equipment to the car's flathead V8 engine.

The 1940 Ford has been a fixture in Hollywood, appearing in countless TV shows and movies such as "American Graffiti," "Bugsy" and "Mulholland Drive."

"With their big fenders and integrated headlights, the 1937-40 Ford was one of the first
streamlined cars from Ford Motor Company," Cabadas said. "Edsel Ford had a hand in its style.
He wanted a family look for Ford and Lincoln vehicles, and so you can see some Lincoln Zephyr
in it. The 1940 was also one of the few cars in its price class with a V8."

Reproduction body: A blank canvas
Hobbyists looking to build a hot rod using the new 1940 body are limited only by their
imagination and budget. The new body is available with a stock firewall that accommodates
the original flathead V8. However, for those looking for greater performance from a modern
powertrain, the new 1940 Ford body can alternatively be ordered with a recessed firewall that
will allow much larger modern engines to be installed.

As with the officially licensed reproduction parts available for the 1965-70 Mustang bodies, Ford
also supports the 1940 Ford with an array of correct mechanical and trim restoration parts. To
see what is available for the 1940, visit www.fordrestorationparts.com.

Dennis Carpenter, owner of one of the nation's largest classic Ford restoration parts companies,
owes his start in the business more than 40 years ago to the 1940 Ford.

Carpenter was having trouble locating a good used set of dash knobs for a car he was restoring
? and still owns ? so he approached Ford and obtained permission to reproduce the knobs using original factory blueprints and designs. Today his company, Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts, produces many Ford-licensed parts for the 1940 Ford. With the body now back in production, Carpenter is gearing up to add even more trim parts for the car.

"When you see a beautifully restored 1940 Ford, it is like a piece of jewelry," Carpenter said. "People just really love the lines of that car. It is timeless and appeals to all ages."

Pet Puppy Argument - The Lion's Den - Ex-Christian.Net

Recently, Astreja said that Jesus was not acting righteously when he called a Canaanite woman a dog.??In defense of the gospels (Matthew 15 and Mark 7), JayL/greco, now banned, said this:

Calling a foreign woman a dog is not righteous.
Excellent post as usual Astreja. Do you have a reference for the dog bit (!) I must have missed that one. Mind you there's so much shite to wade through in the Bible.

Oh, she must be referring to the time when Jesus called a Canaanite woman as 'dog'. But it is a poor translation. The more accurate translation is 'pet puppie'. So he called her a puppie.

I reply not to feed the troll but in case anyone is faced with a similar attempt by fundy apologists to make Jesus out to be complimenting the Canaanite woman.

This "pet puppy" argument fails on a number of fronts.

1. linguistic.??The Greek for "to the dogs" is "kusi."??That word appears when Jesus is quoted elsewhere as saying, do not take what is holy and throw it to the dogs.??Here, the form for "to the dogs" is "kunariois."??The ending -arion is diminutive (cf. the name of the son of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, "Caesarion," i.e. Little Caesar), so that "kunarion" does mean little dog or puppy (compare Plato's Euthydemus 298d, where it refers to a dog's offspring).??The extra signification "pet," however, is added by a gratuitous assumption.??Ancient people often had dogs in their household, especially if they lived in the country, where the dogs would warn against the approach of strangers (I noticed this in Morocco in our own time).??The notion that these young dogs are "pet puppies" as modern middle class people think of their pets is not a necessary implication of the text.

2. logical.??The children are of higher status than the dogs, no matter the age of the dogs.??Jesus is downgrading the Canaanite woman in comparison to Jews, however you slice the "young dog" part.??Since humans are made in the image of God and animals are not, Jesus' metaphor clearly marks the Canaanite woman as of low status.??But she is really in the image of God, according to Christian and Jewish teaching.

3.??historical/social.??I have not researched this, but I do not believe that observant Jews of Jesus' day kept "pets" as we do today, as humanified members of the family.??The laws of kashrut forbid doing work on the Sabbath.??A family pet requires work and attention every day of the week.??That is why Orthodox Jewish friends of mine do not keep pets - it's too difficult to manage the problems that pets create for shabbos.??I don't think, therefore, that Jesus means "pet."??It's up to the Christian apologist to prove this.

I actually think that it's obvious that Jesus' point is theological, and I don't really think that we should apply modern PC notions to 1st century idioms.??The prejudice against non-Jews that Jesus encodes in his speech is that which was taught by his religion.??On the other hand, the pet puppy argument has no foundation.

edited to add:??I think Jay's/greco's use of this argument is evidence that he at least at one time was a fundy.??Fundamentalist preachers love to draw out inferences w/ emotive connotations from parts of an ancient word's range of meaning, even when the evidence does not support the inference.

Drug used to treat glaucoma actually grows human hair

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? If you're balding and want your hair to grow back, then here is some good news. A new research report appearing online in The FASEB Journal shows how the FDA-approved glaucoma drug, bimatoprost, causes human hair to regrow. It's been commercially available as a way to lengthen eyelashes, but these data are the first to show that it can actually grow human hair from the scalp.

"We hope this study will lead to the development of a new therapy for balding which should improve the quality of life for many people with hair loss," said Valerie Randall, a researcher involved in the work from the University of Bradford, Bradford, UK. "Further research should increase our understanding of how hair follicles work and thereby allow new therapeutic approaches for many hair growth disorders."

To make this discovery, Randall and colleagues conducted three sets of experiments. Two involved human cells and the other involved mice. The tests on human cells involved using hair follicles growing in organ culture as well as those take directly from the human scalp. In both of these experiments, the scientists found that bimatoprost led to hair growth. The third set of experiments involved applying bimatoprost to the skin of bald spots on mice. As was the case with human cells, the drug caused hair to regrow.

"This discovery could be the long-awaited follow up to Viagra that middle-aged men have been waiting for," said Gerald Weissmann, MD, editor-in-chief of The FASEB Journal. "Given that the drug is already approved for human use and its safety profile is generally understood, this looks like a promising discovery that has been right in front of our eyes the whole time. On to the front of our scalp!"
