Families Fight Against Childhood Cancer

Logan and Kristi Littau enjoy reading their four-year-old son Keegan fairy tales but the Winner family knows in real life not every story has a happy ending.

"I don't want anyone else to hear your son has a five percent chance of living," Logan said.

The Littau's younger son, Wesson, was extremely fussy when he was a baby. When he was three-months-old, Wesson started suffering from some troubling symptoms.

"Wesson was having some bloody stools about two weeks before we brought him in. He was having some cold symptoms," Kristi said.

They took him to the local doctor's office, who then decided to fly him to Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls. They were shocked by the diagnosis. Doctors said Wesson had Infant ALL or Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

"He was severely sick to the point where he almost didn't make it to Sanford," Kristi said.

"It was hard to comprehend. One day you think you have just a fussy baby and the next day you might not make it through the night," Logan said.

After surgery, doctors said Wesson had a 50 percent chance of surviving, but then the baby boy did not respond to regular cancer treatment.

"In the beginning, we told each other that we felt bad for people who had to do experimental treatment on their kids and then it turned out that's all we had. A lot of the things he went through were extremely difficult," Logan said.

At just thirteen-months-old, Wesson lost his battle with cancer.

"He was just always happy, no matter what he was going through," Logan said.

"He had so much personality. Where his older brother is really shy, Wesson was really outgoing and flirtatious with the nurses," Kristi said.

Even though telling their story is difficult, the Littaus have made it their life-long mission to increase awareness about childhood cancer.

"It's not looked at as much as it should be and it's going to be a long process, but a huge goal of ours because kids are not surviving cancer," Kristi said.

"Looking for a cure and nothing else would be good," Logan said.
