Facebook says Instagram is gaining, not losing, users

Facebook Inc. released data Thursday showing a recent gain in users of the social site's Instagram photo service, following weeks of speculation that its audience may be dwindling in the wake of a privacy flap.

Facebook said Instagram now has more than 90 million monthly active users, which it said is a 10% increase over the past month.

The new data release marks a shift for Facebook, which has previously reported Instagram's audience in terms of registered users.

Facebook uses the monthly active user metric to account for its total world-wide audience on the social networking site--which now numbers more than one billion.

Thursday's announcement comes after several media reports noted sharp declines in Instagram's estimated audience. That in turn followed a flare-up in response to a new user policy proposed by Instagram that could have enabled the use of photos uploaded to the site for advertising purposes.

A number of users publicly declared they would abandon the service as a result of the policy. However, Instagram later clarified that it wouldn't be making photos available for advertising.

"Instagram continues to see very strong growth around the world," Kevin Systrom, the service's founder, said in a prepared statement released Thursday.

During a conference call to accompany Facebook's third-quarter earnings report in October, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Instagram had more than 100 million registered users at that time--compared to 27 million when Facebook agreed to buy the service in April of last year.

The merger agreement, reached when Facebook was still closely held, was initially valued at roughly $1 billion, including $300 million in cash and nearly 23 million Facebook shares then pegged at $31 apiece.

Facebook shares were trading at about $19 apiece by the time the Instagram purchase closed in September. They were trading at $30.15 after hours on Thursday.

Facebook is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings on Jan. 30. It wasn't immediately clear if the company plans to provide regular updates on the size of Instagram's audience.
